Exasperated talkback listeners have resorted to venting their frustration at Nine’s radio station 6PR live on air over its continued criticism of Mark McGowan’s hard border pandemic stance.

Tempers hit boiling point when infuriated listeners yesterday dialled into the station’s Morning show threatening to desert it all together.

“I’m with Mark McGowan all the way. I have to say I’m very disappointed with 6PR for bagging him so much. All over the weekend that’s all we’ve had, (host) Jane Marwick and all the rest of it. I’ve turned off at the weekends now and I’m about to turn off with a lot of my friends as well,” one upset listener said.

It spells even further bad news for the radio station which finished in seventh spot in the most recent Perth ratings — slumping by 0.7 percentage points to 7.9 per cent against ABC Perth (11.2).

The listener also pointed out that Marwick was upset due to her husband Michael being unable to fly home to Perth in time for Christmas due to the escalating cluster outbreak in Sydney.

“Well, I’m sorry, a lot of people are stuck,” the listener continued. “Why keep bagging the guy?”

Listeners are already on edge after a slew of line-up changes were announced. Last week Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas — who works for Seven West Media, publisher of The West Australian — departed the long-running breakfast program he hosted with Steve Mills. The popular pair will be replaced by one-man show Gareth Parker. “You know what surprises me, and this is where I think the media needs to be rapped on the knuckles, is they’re all quick to shoot the tall poppy. You know, kill the messenger,” another caller told yesterday’s Mornings show.

“If anything WA has done right, it has had zero community. Do you think any of the other States have learned from what we’ve done right? No. It’s typical East Coast tall poppy.”
