Mumbrella Publish Awards: The West Australian scoops ten nominations

The West Australian has dominated the field of finalists in the national Mumbrella Publish Awards.

The West has scooped 10 nominations in the annual prizes held by the leading media industry website, including Brand of the Year and Editor of the Year as well two of the five finalist spots in Podcast of the Year.

Investigations reporter Annabel Hennessy is up for two awards — Journalist of the Year and Single Article of the Year.

Last October she revealed the tragic death of 11-year-old Annaliesse Ugle, who took her own life after her alleged rapist was given bail. The revelations shocked the nation and led to the McGowan Government vowing to change bail laws to make them tougher on people accused of alleged child abuse.

She recently won a Walkley Award for the investigation, which judges said was “public interest journalism at its best ... she gave a voice to the most voiceless in the community”.

Caitlyn Rintoul has been nominated for Young Writer of the Year after her recent series of stories revealing rape allegations across the FIFO industry. Her reporting prompted a powerful parliamentary committee to open an inquiry into the issue.

Indigenous affairs reporter Rangi Hirini is one of three finalists in the Columnist of the Year category. One of the opinion articles she has been nominated for was a powerful piece on how she was sick of being told she didn’t look Aboriginal enough.

The West Australian has two shows in the Best Podcast category — “The West Live” and “Claremont: The Trial”.

“The West Live”, a morning daily current affairs show hosted by Ben O’Shea, boasts more than 100,000 downloads every month.

Following the twists and turns of the court proceedings which saw Bradley Robert Edwards jailed for life for the murders of Jane Rimmer and Ciara Glennon, “Claremont: The Trial” has been downloaded more than 6.5 million times.

Artist Don Lindsay, whose artwork illustrates the opinion pages of the newspaper, has been nominated for Designer of the Year.

The West’s Charles Dickens-inspired 16-page wrap of the Federal Budget is up for Special Edition of the Year.

“I’m really proud of the team,” West Australian Newspapers editor-in-chief Anthony De Ceglie, a finalist in the Editor of the Year category, said. “It’s easy to understand why we’re up for Brand of the Year when see how diverse our nominations are.”

Winners will be announced at a virtual awards ceremony on September 9.
