Actor and director Rachel Griffiths deleted an Instagram post about getting her nails done after copping backlash from followers about trivialising the situation in America. Here’s what happened. The actor and director uploaded a picture of her hand, with reference to the upheaval in America that it was “easier on the soul to watch” with beautiful nails. People were quick to point out it was a tone deaf post and she quickly removed it after the backlash. The timing was seen as bizarre on the day social media united with the hashtag #blackouttuesday. The post read: “Shallow I know... America is burning people are dying ... but still it just seems easier on the soul to watch all this happening with beautiful nails. And judging by the line of desperate ladies I am not alone. Shallow people we are but I need to share this important covid update. The manicurists are open!!! Tip generously as they have had not (sic) income since covid lock down.” Griffiths, who directed Ride Like a Girl, later posted to her 23,000 followers that she didn’t “intend to trivialise just escape it”. On a post of a video featuring Stan Grant, she wrote: “The last few days have been wrenching. My post early today leant away from that pain but I understand in doing so it pained others who can’t look away from what’s happening — can’t turn off and check out because it is their lives — their brothers their sisters their children. And it’s not over ‘there’. This our country’s stain also. I did not intend to trivialise just escape it. “But that I understand is part of the problem. Here are some facts from #stangrant that are ours. Australia’s.” Griffiths also updated the post with an apology. “I am sorry. I am sorry that I got it so wrong today.” In 1997 Griffiths famously bared her breasts to protest against the opening of Melbourne’s Crown casino. Last year she starred in ABC series Total Control alongside Deborah Mailman, which had initially been called Black Bitch in an attempt to call out a racial slur.
