Peter Rowsthorn joins the cast of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert musical at Crown Perth

He’s conquered the world of comedy, the small screen, and now Peter Rowsthorn’s latest role will see him tackle a whole lot of lycra as he shimmies on stage for Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The beloved local comic arrived with fantastical fanfare yesterday at Crown Perth, landing by chopper to announce the musical will descend on Crown Theatre in May.

Rowsthorn will play Bernadette, alongside drag artists Cougar Morrison (Tick) and Nick Mayer (Adam) and a cast of 30 others in the stage adaptation of iconic 1994 Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

“I’ve been looking forward to doing this for a year and a half, stand-up comedy is my main thing, I occasionally used to do work for Black Swan (Theatre). I would just love a break from stand-up,” Rowsthorn told The West Australian.

Raring and ready to shake his groove thing, the former Kath and Kim star did have one demand for yesterday’s media call — Spanx — as he donned the leotard and heels for the first time.

Rowsthorn has in fact had a taste of drag before.

“I did Rocky Horror show for a while, never to this extent though,” he said. “I’m going to have to put a lot of work into my dancing skills. But with a bit of rehearsing and we’ll get our heads around the storylines and the characters it’s going to be great — it’s a great show, it’s hilarious and heartwarming.”
