The hipster brewers behind a Bob Hawke-themed beer have put up a mural of the former PM urging Aussies to get vaccinated so they can get “closer to the pub”.

The mural at Hawke’s Brewery in Sydney’s Marrickville shows Mr Hawke smiling behind a mask, giving a thumbs up and filling a schooner.

“Every jab gets us closer to the pub”, read the big white letters above the Labor larrikin’s grey mane.

“We’ve seen a lot of hurt through the hospitality industry so we just want to help our hospo mates the best way we can,” brewery co-founder David Gibson said.

“And we thought, ‘what better way than a 10m tall Bob Hawke with his sleeves rolled up to help get that message out there?’”

Mr Hawke, who was prime minister between 1983 and 1991, agreed to lend his name and face to the brewery in 2016 on the condition that a percentage of the profits go to an environmental charity.

He was known to enjoy a few beers and won admiration while studying at Oxford for downing a yard of ale in a record-setting 11 seconds.

Hawke‘s Brewing said the schooner glass that the mural version of Mr Hawke is filling will topped up as more Australians get vaccinated, reaching a fully poured beer when the nation hits the goal of 80 per cent double doses.

A QR code on Mr Hawke‘s arm was also said to direct those who scan it to their nearest vaccine clinic.

“For us it’s a race to reopen, like any small business, and we just want to get out of lockdown knowing that our families and staff are safe and healthy,” Mr Gibson said.

“We want everyone to get back to living their best lives and that includes going to the pub.”

The mural was painted by street artist Scott Marsh.
