Kia has announced it will launch seven new electric cars by 2027 — which will include performance variants — with the first to be revealed early this year.

Currently known as the CV, the brand’s first EV will sit on the Hyundai Group’s new E-GMP electric vehicle platform and — like Hyundai’s soon-to-be-revealed Ioniq 5 — will likely be a crossover.

Unlike its sister brand, Kia says it won’t offer its EVs under a different sub-brand.

Speaking to global media via an online brand relaunch event, Kia’s global boss Artur Martins said the aim was to instead use electric models to elevate the Kia brand.

“Most probably in the future, we’re going to become an EV brand (anyway),” he said.

At the same event, Kia chief executive Hosung Song confirmed the upcoming EVs — including the CV — would have performance variants.

However, once again all models will be offered under the Kia name and without a performance moniker, as Mr Martins said the brand’s performance models weren’t aimed at motorsport or the track.

“The high performance of Kia is about excitement to drive, it’s not so much in the N or M territory,” he said, referencing the performance arms of Hyundai and BMW respectively.

“I think that’s an important difference: our performance cars will not be track cars, we won’t go racing.

“But I think our consumers can experience the excitement of driving using it in their daily lives, going to work, visiting their parents and travelling with their families.”

Mr Song said despite the global shift towards buying SUVs, Kia’s EV offerings would span all segments, including traditional passenger cars.
