City of Joondalup councillor Nigel Jones was an Australian of the Year finalist in 2008 and is an ambassador for the Mental Health Foundation of Australia, which has a fundraiser walk on October 18. He gets around in an Italian car but also pines for something British.

What are you driving and why did you buy it?

A 1999 Alfa Romeo Spider Convertible 2.0 twin spark. I have been an admirer of this model for over 20 years as when the roof is down I think it looks classy without being pretentious. I love it and hope it will be a future rare classic.

My desire for British classics like the Jaguar XJS and Leyland Mini has never wavered. However if money was no object it would have to be an Aston Martin, it oozes style.

What was your first car?

A brown Ford Escort MK 1 which I had when I was 17. It was the key to freedom and nightlife.

What annoys you most about other motorists?

Reckless and dangerous drivers, particularly those on their mobile.

What’s your favourite driving music?

I love listening to Flava 95.8 FM (Auckland radio) which plays non-stop R&B. UB40 (from my hometown area), Craig David and Tinie Tempah are often blaring.
