Melbourne City’s bid to regain the A-League championship has been boosted by the signing of versatile Finland international Thomas Lam.

The 28-year-old midfielder, who can also play in the centre of defence, has joined City on a two-year deal after spending last season in Bulgaria with CSKA Sofia.

City’s director of football Michael Petrillo said Lam had “key attributes” that made him a “perfect fit” for the 2020-21 champions, who are keen to wrest back A-League supremacy from titleholders Western United.

“Thomas is coming into his best years in football,” Petrillo said.

“He is a player who has a great passing range with an ability to find through passes.

“Physically, his athleticism and mobility were key attributes that stood out … along with his technical ability.”

Lam was born in the Netherlands but was able to represent Finland via his mother’s heritage.

He has been capped 28 times and was a member of Finland’s Euro 2020 squad.

Lam’s previous clubs include Dutch outfits AZ Alkmaar and PEC Zwolle as well as English side Nottingham Forest.

“I’m very excited to be joining a club of Melbourne City’s stature,” Lam said.

“They have achieved great things on the pitch in recent times and I am determined to help the team win more silverware this season.

“I can’t wait to get to Melbourne, settle in and meet my new teammates, coaches and the city fans.”

City’s Australia Cup campaign continues on Wednesday night against Wellington Phoenix at Casey Fields, where the winner will advance to the quarter-finals.
