Perfect weekend as Albany Storm claim under-12 title at rugby 7s tournament in Bunbury

The Albany Storm Rugby Union Club took out the NAIDOC Rugby 7s under-12s tournament in Bunbury last month.

Ten players made the trip to compete in the cup that ran from July 16-17 at the Leschenault Recreation Grounds in Australind.

The squad played eight rounds against Kalamunda Bulls, Margaret River Gropers, Busselton Beatles, NAIDOC Barbarians, Joondalup Raptors and Joondalup Warriors.

The Albany-based team won all eight of their matches to cap a perfect weekend of rugby in their first competition together.

Megan Holland, mother of player Marley Holland, said it was an outstanding achievement for a squad from Albany to go undefeated in a tournament against established rugby teams.

“Most of these other teams train up to four times a week with them all playing each other on the weekends,” she said.

“Our boys train four weeks before a competition for one hour per week.

“So for them (Albany Storm) to take out every game was pretty amazing.

“I feel it’s the amazing sportsmanship and friendships within the team which get them through.

“Our coaches Paul Osborne and Allen Ripohau have so much passion for the game and get our boys fired up.”
