A permanent seaside sculpture exhibition will be among three tourism projects at Middleton Beach and Mt Clarence to share in $1.8 million of State funding if a Liberal government is elected on March 13.

Opposition Leader Zak Kirkup last week announced the plan to use $1.2 million of Royalties for Regions money to fund a permanent art and sculpture exhibition at the northern end of Middleton Beach.

The package would also involve $400,000 for trails linking Middleton Beach to Mt Clarence, giving tourists access to the National Anzac Centre from the beach. The trails are part of a City of Albany plan to develop a 242ha tourism and recreation precinct across Mt Adelaide and Mt Clarence.

The City’s Mounts Master Plan was also targeted last week by Premier Mark McGowan, who committed $3.2 million towards mixed trails across Mt Clarence and Mt Adelaide under Labor’s plan for Albany.

A City of Albany project to install a line of soldier sculptures known as Ghost Sentinels along the Albany avenue of honour at Mt Clarence would also receive $200,000 in the Liberals’ Royalties for Regions pledge.

Shadow regional development minister Steve Thomas said the projects would bring “critical diversification” to the Albany economy.

“The Field of Light brought in thousands of extra people, thousands of visitors and extra revenue to Albany,” he said.

“The Liberal vision for Albany is to make it a real experience to come and visit, that is even bigger and more memorable than Field of Lights, if we can achieve it.”

Albany Liberal candidate Scott Leary said the tourism projects would “set Albany up for the future”.

“These projects will build on the exciting prospects we see coming, like the new hotels on the Albany and Middleton foreshores,” he said.
