After a stint in the Eastern States, an up-and-comer bearing a famous name in West Australian winemaking is returning to the Margaret River region.

Nic Bowen has taken over the top job at Howard Park, after returning to WA from a stint at McLaren Vale-based winery Tintara.

Mr Bowen, a second-generation winemaker, grew up in the Great Southern, but studied winemaking and honed his skills in the South West before gaining more experience overseas and in the east.

“I am extremely excited to be joining Howard Park, a great Western Australian marque with family heritage at its heart,” Mr Bowen said.

“I have always had a soft spot for West Australian wines.

“Returning to the region is an amazing opportunity to immerse myself once again and I am thrilled to be working alongside a valued and experienced team.”

Bowen replaces Gourmet Traveller Wine 2018 winemaker of the year winner Janice McDonald in the role, although she will remain with the company as director of winemaking.

Burch Family Wines owner Jeff Burch said he was looking forward to seeing the pair combine their talents.

“They will make a formidable team,” he said. “We are looking forward to having Nic on board and are excited for what the future has in store.”

Mr Bowen specialises in sparkling winemaking, having worked under specialist Ed Carr for 12 years.

“Nic’s passion and enthusiasm for sparkling wine stood out, but his broad skill set and ability to make quality wines across the board, will complement and build upon our knowledge that can only enhance our offering.”
