Employers across the South West have been recognised for helping the region’s volunteers get out there to help others.

Companies from Bunbury, Collie and Harvey were among 24 businesses recognised at the Volunteer Employer Recognition Awards in Bunbury.

Among those recognised for supporting their employees were Bonissimo Coffee in Bunbury, Ampol Busselton, Australia Post Busselton Post Shop, 4 Giants in Bunbury, Bunbury Hospital, Clearline Communications Bunbury, Clifton Motel Bunbury, HTE Transport in Picton, Premier Coal in Collie and South Bunbury Education Support Centre.

Emergency Services Minister Reece Whitby said the State’s emergency services volunteers had committed more than 120,000 hours to helping others during the past year, service that would not be possible without the support of their employers.

“We can’t predict when disaster will strike and that is why the flexibility and commitment of these employers to their volunteering staff is so important, Mr Whitby said.

“These awards recognise the valuable contribution of employers throughout WA and I thank and congratulate the VERA recipients for helping create a safer State.”

Nominations for the awards were up by 20 per cent this year, the surge in nominations following several significant emergency incidents including the Wooroloo and Red Gully bushfires, Tropical Cyclone Seroja and severe flooding throughout the State.
