There are fears for a spearfisherman after his equipment was found in waters on the NSW south coast.

The gear was recovered by a fisherman in about six metres of water approximately 100 metres off Narrawallee Beach Headland, about 3pm on Tuesday.

The local Marine Area Command is asking for public help to find the owner of the rail gun and spear, Go-Pro 4 camera, fish bag, LED torch and red croc-style shoes.

Police have reviewed images on the camera's memory card and believe the owner of the gear may be a man of Asian appearance, about 20-30 years old and of a slim build.

The man is believed to drive a Jeep-style vehicle.
