Masters dealt heartbreaking defeat after tense shootout at WA women’s titles

Masters earned a grand final berth to be the most successful of three Eastern Goldfields Hockey Association teams at last weekend’s women’s State championships in Perth.

The side notched 2-1 and 5-1 wins over Warren and North Midlands, respectively, when the carnival began last Friday and followed up the next morning with a 4-0 win over Peel.

It was a similar story on Saturday afternoon when Masters easily beat Geraldton, 5-0.

That result earned them a berth against Esperance in the final, with the scores level at nil-all at the completion of regulation time.

The teams remained deadlocked after five penalties before Esperance grabbed a tense victory in a golden goal shootout.

Of the 15 players who made up the EGHA’s Masters line-up, 11 hailed from Mines including Sian Hough and Ashley Kingston.

The EGHA’s division 2 team finished fifth after beating Esperance on Sunday, 2-1, and the division 4 line-up were seventh after also winning their final game.

Both division 2 losses were by 1-0 scorelines against East Avon and Roe and they also featured in a tense nil-all draw with Ongerup.

Similarly, the division 4 team’s record was somewhat misleading and included gut-wrenching 1-0 losses to Central Midlands and Upper Great Southern.
