The Nationals WA has pledged $100 million to ensure reliable communication networks in regional areas, with better mobile coverage vital in times of emergency.

The Nationals’ State Member for Roe Peter Rundle said the current lack of reliable communication during fire seasons was affecting communities such as those living in Cascade north-west of Esperance.

Mr Rundle said the Cascade community was under threat during the 2015 Esperance fires and lack of mobile reception inhibited efforts to manage the situation.

“The Cascade community has been calling for the delivery of a new tower for many years and I support their call for change,” he said.

“The existing Cascade tower only services an area 12km north of Cascade leaving many residents with little or no reception.”

The Nationals pledge included $20m for network operators to identify and prioritise critical infrastructure solutions along with $75m to identify and prioritise mobile black spots for investment.

Mr Rundle said Cascade residents had raised the issue of an inadequate battery back-up supply in times of powerless emergencies, and faced interruptions to communications which affected their farming and family businesses.

“Prioritising this funding will bring greater certainty to a community that deserves safe and strong communication channels in their homes and workplaces,” he said.

The funding would also include $5m to work with local governments to create or expand public wi-fi.

“Living and working in remote and rural areas can be challenging at the best of times but one thing every community deserves in regional WA is access to good telecommunication. I know this commitment is a strong step in the right direction,” he said.

“When completed the initiative will enhance mobile reception safeguarding this area in future emergency situations and bringing mobile reception up to an acceptable standard for a liveable community.”
