Nine Mid West-Gascoyne businesses recognised by DFES at the 2025 Volunteer Employer Recognition Awards

Nine Mid West-Gascoyne businesses have been recognised for their exceptional commitment to emergency service volunteers at the 2025 Volunteer Employer Recognition Awards, held last Friday at Perth’s ANZAC Club. The awards celebrate employers who allow staff to leave work at a moment’s notice to respond to emergencies, attend training sessions or support community safety initiatives. The program also acknowledges self-employed volunteers who put their business on hold when their community needs them. Mid West-Gascoyne recipients include Geraldton’s Cramer & Neill Refrigeration, Barnes Hydraulic Services Canover, Dandaragan Mechanical Services, Cervantes General Store, Kenjen’s Fresh Produces Carnarvon, Elders Carnarvon, Jurien Property Repairs and Maintenance, Leichhardt Lake MacLeod operation, and McIntosh & Son Moora. These businesses were honoured for their flexibility and willingness to release staff during work hours, often adjusting rosters, closing their doors or absorbing financial loss so volunteers can attend call-outs and maintain vital emergency services in regional towns. Across WA, 78 businesses and self-employed volunteers were recognised this year, representing industries ranging from small retail and mechanical workshops to major organisations. VERA, now in it’s 17th year, is hosted by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia said these employers play a vital and often unseen role in the State’s emergency response capability. “VERA celebrates and acknowledges employers who go above and beyond to enable their staff to respond to emergencies during work hours,” he said. “The Cook Government recognises the employers and organisations who strive to generously contribute to our State’s successful emergency services. “On behalf of all Western Australians, I thank our dedicated volunteers who donate their time playing a key role in keeping our communities safe.”
