All Blacks show class in 6-2 win in opening round of UGSHA season

After months without action, the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association commenced its shortened 2020 season last week with eight grades taking part.

Five sides will compete in the men’s A-grade division and four in the women’s A-grade.

In the two B-grade competitions there are eight men’s teams and six in the women’s.

This season will have six teams in the J7 competition, seven teams in J11, four teams in middle school and seven in upper school.

All Blacks began their men’s A-grade season with an emphatic win over Lakers, 6-2, on Saturday night while Riffs defeated Olympics 3-1 in the other match on Friday.

In the women’s A-grade competition, Robins started with a 2-0 victory over Warriors on Saturday and in the women’s B-grade on the same day Warriors downed Robins 2-1 and All Blacks drew 1-1 with Wickepin.

The other Saturday game was one-sided as Warriors belted Williams 7-0 in the men’s B-grade while on Friday in the same division Wagin did enough to beat Olympics 5-4.

There was a 3-3 draw between Pumas and Leopards in the middle school competition in the other Friday fixture.

Games began on Thursday night where in middle school Tigers beat Cougars 4-1 while in upper school Eagles downed Vultures 1-0, Falcons defeated Panthers 5-1 and Rangers were too strong for NRC Toucan 2-0.

The association will run a 10-week competition and the grand final is set down for September 19.
