Updated: The WA Police bomb squad has swarmed a Perth shopping precinct after the discovery of a suspicious package in a bin.

Officers responded to reports that two boxes were beeping about 12.30pm this afternoon, with the TRG cordoning off an area on the corner of Riseley Street and Kearns Crescent in Applecross.

They looked into the bin and determined the boxes, which had tape on them, contained old smoke alarms that had been pulled out of a nearby business.

Batteries in the alarms caused them to continue beeping.

The scene was reopened about 2.15pm.

A local shop owner said earlier “no one really knows what’s going on, but (the suspicious package) looks big”.

“There’s been police here for hours,” she said.
