A furious war of words has erupted between two of Australia’s most powerful politicians during Question Time, ending in a brutal sledge of Defence Minister Peter Dutton.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese erupted in anger as the Prime Minister delivered a longwinded rant about Labor and the Greens allegedly forming a coalition government together.

“They hope to be a Green-Labor government after the next election,” Scott Morrison told the parliament.

“That's what they hope for. They’re calling themselves shadow ministers down there in the Greens.”

Mr Albanese jumped to his feet, insisting that the Speaker stop Mr Morrison’s rant given it lacked any relevance to the question the PM was supposed to be answering about climate change.

But before the Labor leader could finish his complaint, Mr Dutton emerged from his chair, preparing to shut Mr Albanese down.

“Well hang on,” Mr Albanese yelled at Mr Dutton as he walked towards him.

“I’m still here. You sit down.

“Sit down, boofhead.

“I’ve got the call, sit down.”

Labor’s side of the House roared with laughter as Mr Dutton returned to his seat.

“The only coalition in this parliament is the revel over there,” Mr Albanese said, pointing furiously at Mr Dutton.

But the embarrassment proved too much for the Defence Minister who rose from his seat once more to serve the opposition leader a brutal hit back.

“Mr. Speaker, if there was a standing order on glass jaws (Mr Albanese) would be in order,” Mr Dutton said.

“Clearly, there is not, and he should be sat down.”

The two riled-up men then gave each other a death stare through the perspex glass put in place to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The Speaker smirked as he attempted to hide his amusement over the scuffle.
