A Roebourne youth centre that feeds more than 40 children a night has received a boost, with a local engineering firm donating a new barbecue.

Karratha-based company Red Rock Engineering donated the barbecue to the Roebourne PCYC last Thursday.

A cook-up was held to celebrate the new grill, with burgers, kebabs, and sausages being served for 100 schoolchildren attending the Roebourne Primary School short film festival.

Roebourne PCYC centre manager Vish Sharma said the facility fed about 40-60 children a night.

“We’ve been trying to increase the resources that we had at the PCYC, whether its utensils or equipment, and one of the things we didn’t have was a barbecue,” he said.

“I liaised with Mark Bradley from Yara and mentioned that the centre was in need of a new barbecue.”

Mr Sharma said Red Rock Engineering then expressed interest in providing the gas-powered barbecue.

“It was quite a great addition to our centre,” he said.

“Just from doing this event at the school, we have 100 kids here that we are feeding, and we are planning an event for NAIDOC Week already that the barbie will be utilised for.”

The night was also attended by the Pilbara Regiment’s Captain Jarrad Dekuyer, who handed out footballs to children who teachers felt had represented the army’s four central values: courage, initiative, respect, and teamwork.
