Perth and South West weather: Bureau of Meteorology warns cold front to bring winds, heavy rain to WA

If you thought we’d had an easy winter so far, think again.

The season is set to arrive with a clout, doubling Perth’s monthly rainfall tally as the State is battered by wild weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning ahead of three days of cold fronts set to hit from tonight.

Perth and the South West are expected to cop the brunt of the weather from this weekend, with showers and thunderstorms expected from tomorrow.

The Bureau has warned of damaging wind gusts of up to 100km/h and heavy rainfall of up to 70mm in some areas of the South West.

A strong cold front is expected to clout the Capes region late on Sunday before hitting Perth in the early hours of Monday morning.

Perth, which has received 66.4mm so far this month — less than half of the average for this time of year — is forecast to be drenched with up to 60mm of rain on Sunday and Monday.

“Showers and thunderstorms will continue through Sunday, becoming gustier, heavier and more frequent during the day, especially in western parts of the South West Land Division,” the Bureau said.

Farmers will be pleased to see some wet weather, with the Bureau forecasting the rainfall to push into agricultural regions.

Western areas of rural WA are expected to cop up to 30mm of rain, while eastern parts are forecast up to 10mm.

The Bureau has warned ocean users of damaging surf conditions as far north as Geraldton and south to Albany on Monday and in the Capes region through to Albany on Tuesday.

“These conditions will be hazardous for coastal activities such as swimming, surfing and rock fishing, and tides are likely to be higher than normal during this period,” the Bureau said.

Temperatures in Perth are forecast to be warmer next week, with the mercury to drop below 10 degrees Celsius only once on Thursday.
