Margaret River Senior High School surfers triumph in Australian Junior Surf Titles

Margaret River Senior High School claimed two school shield divisions at the weekend finals of the Australian Junior Surf Titles.

But the region’s individual surfers lost out to a number of other WA and interstate rivals in their heats.

WA’s Coral Durrant and Jamie Thomson from NSW came out on top in the blue-ribbon under-18 division finals contest organisers said saw “epic conditions”.

Yallingup’s Emma Cattlin gave Durrant a difficult time during the competition to come in second.

The under-16 girls’ final was a Victorian affair with Ellie Harrison beating Jazz Wylie by half a point.

The under-16 boys title saw NSW’s Lennix Smith defeat Queenslander Ty Richardson in a final featuring no local surfers.

Queensland’s Jahly Stokes claimed the under-14 girls title and Dane Henry from NSW won the boys’ competition.

MRSHS’s boys’ squad came through with flying colours in the under-19 Shield final with a final score of 18.4, defeating schools from Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

The under-19 MRSHS girls came third in their final, which went to Victorian school St Ignatius College.

Pride was restored by the MRSHS under-16 side which triumphed against interstate schools by a clear margin of 15.75 points, with Miami SHS second on 11.5.

The 2019 Australian Junior Surfing Titles were hosted in Margaret River for the first time since 2008 from November 30 until Saturday.
