Water users in Dunsborough are being urged to use caution after a shark advice warning was issued at the Dunsborough Boat Ramp.

Parks and Wildlife Service officers issued the warning after a whale carcass was discovered about 11am.

A spokesperson from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions said it is possible that residue from the decomposing carcass will act as an attractant which could lead to sharks coming close to shore.

“While it’s not uncommon for sharks to be present off the Western Australian coast throughout the year, people should exercise additional caution until the incident is resolved,” the spokesperson said.

Water users are advised to use additional caution in the Dunsborough area, follow any beach closure notices, and to keep up to date with information on the shark activity using the SharkSmart WA app or Surf Life Saving WA’s Twitter feed.
