Enterprising Bunbury student Zaylee Logie Carruthers has made a major contribution to Bunbury’s In Town Centre, donating 100 pairs of shoes for people in need.

The Year 6 student at Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School reached out to the school community as well as businesses in Bunbury and Perth for used shoes and finished with a total of 167 pairs.

“I really wanted to think of a way to help people in need and thought that donating shoes would be a great way to make a difference to people that may not have shoes or have the chance to wear good shoes,” Zaylee said.

Zaylee first raised the idea at the start of the school year but the global pandemic meant her plans were put on ice until recently.

“I chose to collect shoes because my mum works at a shoe shop and they sometimes get shoes returned that are in really good condition,” she said.

“I wanted to think of a way they could be reused for a good cause.

“I also thought by doing a shoe drive I would be able to collect shoes that people have grown out of or replaced that were still in good condition.”

Zaylee’s goal of collecting 100 shoes was quickly surpassed, so 67 shoes were also donated to the Perth Homeless Support Group.
