Rottnest Island is about to become more affordable for families during the summer holidays with discounted day trips announced for adults and children.

From tomorrow, kids under the age of 12 will be able to travel to Rottnest for free on same-day trips.

And from now until late April, the island is introducing the “Happiest Happy Hour,” where there will be no $19.50 island admission fee per adult for same-day trips after 2pm.

This means adults will be able to travel for as low as $35 return, saving them up to a third of the regular price for ferry tickets.

Tourism Minister Paul Papalia said with day ferries now available at discounted prices, people can enjoy the same experiences as overnight visitors.

“There is nowhere quite like Rottnest and we are committed to continually making it more affordable to visit the island,” he said.

Also announced today was a $1 million refurbishment of the island’s museum.

The museum was renamed the “Wadjemup Museum” to reflect the island’s Aboriginal heritage.

It also recognises the imprisonment of Indigenous people on the island as well as their cultural connections

“The island is an exceptionally significant and rich cultural heritage landscape, and the new Wadjemup Museum will be a hub for sharing its diverse stories from the past and present,” Mr Papalia said.

Other new improvements on the island include the upgrade of 10km of roads in the settlement and the completion of a new $3 million fuel jetty.
