Police and the volunteer Marine Rescue are searching the water in WA’s north for a surfer who might be missing off the coast of Exmouth.

Police say witnesses saw a surfer with a black rashie and white cap who looked as though they were in distress at Bombie’s Break in the Lighthouse Bay area at around 10 this morning, but it’s not known whether the surfer returned to shore.

A text message was sent out to Exmouth residents on Sunday afternoon, urging them to keep an eye out for the surfer.

Anyone who was in the area this morning or knows a surfer in Exmouth who was wearing the described clothes should contact police.

More to come.
