The good folk at RTRFM are coming back from COVID with their first post-lockdown gigs to ring in this year’s Radiothon — one of the station’s most important subscription drives to date.

Running from August 14 to 23, the festivities are a time of celebration with a serious mission to raise funds to keep the independent radio station on air for another year.

Despite being one of Australia’s most respected and popular community broadcasters, RTRFM relies on listener generosity during Radiothon to generate 30 per cent of its annual income on an ordinary year.

However, this year the not-for-profit outfit lost close to a third of its operating revenue due to the cancellation of events such as in The Pines and Neon Picnic in response to social distancing restrictions, making the fundraiser that much more important.

RTRFM has brought back its Early Birds gig to get the party started on Friday, August 14. William Street institution The Bird will be slinging Bloody Marys, coffee and food all morning from 6am, with Aslan, Girlname and Wil Bixler belting out tunes on the decks, along with a live broadcast of Breakfast with Taylah.

The epic Radiothon 2020: There’s No Stopping Us adventure will continue the following night as the station takes over Northbridge with a swag of local bands and performers playing across three venues from 7pm.

Full Frequency crew Allstate, Dart, Micah and Mittens, Rok Riley, Willy Slade & EPHACY will storm The Rechabite’s main hall with big breaks, slinky electro and everything in between.

Downstairs at the Goodwill Club Trainwreck DJs will take a trip into the west coast underground while Black n Blue DJs take up residence on the Hello Rooftop.

Meanwhile, those with a penchant for soul, hip hop and ambient sounds will find Odette Mercy and Her Soul Atomics, Hyclass, T$oko and Boox Kid down the road at The Bird, while next door Ezra Pound will showcase the DJ stylings of Larry D, Doug Swampe, Lia T, i33A and Mama Cass, back on the decks for the first time in years.

RTRFM 92.1’s Radiothon subscription drive runs from Friday, August 14 to Sunday, August 23. Head to rtrfm.com.au for tickets, more information and to subscribe.
