Perth weather: Bureau of Meteorology issue warning for Mid West and Wheatbelt for storms and heavy rain

Perth has been drenched with up to 25mm of rain in 24 hours — but that could be nothing compared with the huge downpour on the horizon. The Perth Hills copped the heaviest rain as a cold front passed overnight, with 25.8mm falling in the Bickley gauge. The Swan Valley and Pearce, in Perth’s east, also saw falls of more than 20mm. The Bureau of Meteorology said the heavy rain was part of a cloud band, which was being fed by tropical moisture in the north, bringing with it more rain than the usual front. And there’s even more to come. The Bureau has issued a warning for even more heavy rainfall today, which could see some parts of the State smash yesterday’s rain tally in a single hour. “One-hourly rainfall totals of 25mm are possible, with six-hourly rainfall totals of up to 60mm,” the Bureau warned. Residents in the Mid West, including Geraldton and Northampton, Northam and the Wheatbelt towns of Merredin, Moora and Wongan Hills are being warned to brace for the wild conditions, which could include thunderstorms and flash flooding. The huge band of rain is expected to move east during Tuesday. Perth has already hit above average rainfall for August, just over two weeks into the month. By Tuesday morning, the city had notched up 135.8mm of rain since the start of August, eclipsing the average of 122mm On Tuesday, up to 15mm of rain is forecast for the city, with up to 35km/h winds and on Wednesday, Perth could see another 25mm of rain. Perth has already smashed a four-year rainfall record, thanks to storms earlier in the month and another 50.3mm would see it break an all-time record for August.
