A blanket of thick fog cloaking the city and the South West has prompted a warning to motorists to take care on the roads with visibility reduced.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Jessica Lingard said three factors contributed to the weather event: cool overnight temperatures due to low cloud cover, very light winds, and moisture in the air from overnight rain.

“Those three things all sort of came together and we have had some really thick fog. I live up in the north-eastern suburbs and visibility when I drove in to work was about 50 to 100m,” Ms Lingard said.

“(The fog) is definitely still out there now and is not expected to clear until (about 10am).”

The bureau monitors fog through visibility metres at Perth Airport and Pearce airbase, but Ms Lingard said it appeared to be thicker north-east of Perth.

“It wasn’t as bad at Perth airport, they didn’t get the real thick fog but in Pearce in the north-east they did — they had cloud on ground. They reported a visibility of less than 300m which is as low as we can record. But visibility was definitely below that.”

Ms Lingard said the fog was not expected to make a reappearance on Friday as conditions dried out.

However, fog was expected through the southern parts of the State in the Great Southern and southern parts of the agricultural regions over the weekend.

Perth resident are in for a winter treat on the weekend with clear skies forecast.

“Over the weekend Perth residents can expect cooler morning s as the clouds stay away,” Ms Lingard said.

“It will be warming up over the weekend ever so slightly, and no real rain for the early parts of the week either. We have a slight chance of a shower on Monday but we are not really going to be seeing much out of that.”
