British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his partner Carrie Symonds have announced the birth of a “healthy baby boy” at a London hospital.

Both mother and baby are doing very well after the birth early on Wednesday, their spokesman said.

“The PM and Ms Symonds would like to thank the fantastic NHS maternity team.”

The announcement of Ms Symonds pregnancy sparked controversy when she revealed she was expecting a baby in late February — just 11 days after his divorce.

Carrie Symonds, 32, revealed that she had been engaged to the British Prime Minister for months — and they were expecting a baby despite the overlap with his separation.

The baby is believed to be premature, with Ms Symonds initially telling her Instagram friends she was due to give birth in British summer, which starts in June.

“I wouldn’t normally post this kind of thing on here but I wanted my friends to find out from me…,” Miss Symonds posted on her private Instagram page.

“Many of you already know but for my friends that still don’t know, we got engaged at the end of last year... and we’ve got a baby hatching early summer.”

The news means Mr Johnson will have to remember how to change nappies at 55.

The pair became the first unmarried couple to move into 10 Downing Street last year.

Just five weeks ago Mr Johnson was struck down with coronavirus and spent several days fighting for life in an intensive care unit.

The pair spent time in isolation, away from each other to avoid Ms Symonds contracting the deadly virus. Mr Johnson has since made a full recovery.

While Ms Symonds wasn’t officially diagnosed with COVID-19, she took to Twitter earlier this month to confirm she had been ill with symptoms.

“I’ve spent the past week in bed with the main symptoms of Coronavirus. I haven’t needed to be tested and, after seven days of rest, I feel stronger and I’m on the mend,” she said.
