KAP appoint new local president in Nth Qld

Katter's Australia Party has appointed Chris Carney as its new president to bolster its representation and steer the party forward in north Queensland.

Mr Carney, who is the director of Carney Group, brings suitable business acumen to the party where it may have fallen short in the past, KAP leader Robbie Katter says.

Mr Katter says he's excited to welcome Mr Carney to the team and says he will increase the party's role as a voice of the people in north Queensland.

"Where we've probably fallen short is having the business acumen in the spine to drive the party forward like the big organisations and the big parties," Mr Katter said on Friday.

"Because we want to develop North Queensland and we want to see this place grow and really stand up to being governed by the southeast corner, we need a champion of business to help us develop.

"It's very pleasing for us and I think this really gives us the gravity that we need to give the representation that people deserve here in North Queensland."

Mr Carney says the KAP approached him and he's excited for the venture into the political sphere.

"I've had a good relationship with everyone in the KAP for a long time, we've been a local business for 40 years," he said.

"KAP speaks for the majority of north and regional Queenslanders.

"They're the only real way to hold the majors (parties) accountable and influence the southeast to actually pay attention to our needs and our challenges.
