Prime Minister Scott Morrison has spoken with his UK counterpart Boris Johnson in the lead up to next month's G7 meeting about reducing carbon emissions to net zero.

In a phone call on Friday evening, the pair also discussed how technology may aid that goal, and how the free trade agreement talks between the two countries were progressing.

Afghanistan, regional security issues, supply chain resilience and other common challenges were also on the agenda.

Mr Morrison will meet with Mr Johnson face-to-face for the first time in over a year at the G7 meeting in the English county of Cornwall next month.

Despite not being a part of the G7 - which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US and the UK, plus the EU - Australia has been invited to attend the summit, which will run between June 11 and 13.

Last week Foreign Minister Marise Payne met with her counterparts from the invited countries, with discussions centring around China relations and the COVID-19 pandemic.
