Described by footy commentator Kane Cornes as a “garage sale” final day of trade period for Collingwood, the Pies freed up much-needed salary cap space.

Collingwood will still foot part of Treloar’s hefty salary, given he still had five years to run on his big-money deal, reportedly around $300,000 per season.

Treloar now heads to his third AFL club after Collingwood parted with first round picks in 2015 and 2016 to get the midfielder from GWS.

The trade ends a sorry saga for both Treloar and the Pies after news Treloar’s fiance and young daughter were heading to Queensland in 2021.

With fears for Treloar’s mental health once his family depart the state raised publicly, relationships between the two parties soured and Treloar was essentially told to find a new home.

“We had conversations with Adam and Tim (manager) around whether his family would move to Queensland… it evolved and we looked at another opportunity,” Pies list boss Ned Guy said after the Treloar was done.

“For some time we have held the view that this year’s draft represents an excellent opportunity to address some of our needs.

“We think in the short term we can improve from within but we can also now strengthen the profile of our list for the medium and longer term. This deal improves significantly our ability to do that.

“With the draft assets we now have, we also have the ability over the next couple of weeks to explore ways of improving our draft position further.”

For Phillips, he heads to Hawthorn after 89 games at the Pies. Collingwood used pick 58 to secure the defender back in 2015.

The Pies now hold picks 14 and 16 in the upcoming AFL Draft.
