Young gun Jye Caldwell is off to Essendon, with the deal struck just minutes from deadline on the final day of the AFL’s trade period.

The 20-year-old joins the Bombers, along with picks 44 and 74.

The Giants get pick 29 and a future second rounder in return.

“We are extremely excited to bring in a young player of Jye’s quality,” Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro said.

“He’s a contested-ball winner who oozes composure and sure ball-handling whenever he’s in possession. Additionally, we know Jye has a lot of development ahead and is only going to get better with more exposure to senior football.

“Jye really complements our young midfield brigade in Andy McGrath, Darcy Parish and Kyle Langford, and will hone his craft alongside experienced players in Dyson Heppell, Dylan Shiel and Zach Merrett amongst a few.

“We’re thrilled to welcome another dynamic midfielder to our list and look forward to seeing Jye don the red and black for years to come.”

Caldwell returns home to Victoria after being taken with pick 11 in the 2018 AFL Draft.

The midfielder managed 11 games in his two seasons at GWS before requesting a trade last month.

The Bombers also secured St Kilda’s Nick Hind in the dying stages of the trade period.

The 26-year-old is a Bombers junior who returns to the club after 21 games in two years.

While the Bombers are celebrating the signing of Caldwell and Hind, they missed out on Bulldog Josh Dunkley.

Dunkley will remain at the kennel despite requesting a trade to the Bombers last week.
