Waterman, the son of dual premiership Eagle Chris, remains hopeful of a second AFL chance after two years without a game at West Coast between 2015 and 2016.

“It would be awesome to see whether I am good enough to play,” Waterman said on Channel Nine.

“(When you’re young) you think that footy’s everything and the highs and the lows determine how you feel in your everyday life… it’s a pretty ordinary thing actually.”

Now 24 and with plenty of perspective under his belt, Waterman was a stand out performer in the WAFL in 2020, winning Claremont’s best and fairest after a 26-goal haul in just 10 games.

In a year where most of his draft competition didn’t play due to the COVID crisis, Waterman’s performances at WAFL level have put him on the radar – especially for clubs over east.

Waterman arrived at the Eagles as a father/son selection (pick 76) in the 2014 AFL Draft.

But his time at West Coast was hampered by an ongoing battle with glandular fever and Waterman was delisted without playing a game at the end of 2016.

The forward admits he felt “drained” every day as he battled symptoms including dizziness and headaches.

Now four years on, Waterman is confident his health battles are past him.

“If the opportunity did come (to return to the AFL) it’d be awesome,” he said.

The AFL Draft will be held on December 9.
