VideoWest Coast's Will Schofield announces retirement to playing group

Retiring Eagles defender Will Schofield admits he’s no guarantee to hold his spot in West Coast’s line up to face Collingwood, but says he’s content with that.

A premiership winner in 2018, Schofield last week announced this season would be his last.

But with a host of big names set to come back into the Eagles line up for Saturday’s do-or-die elimination final with Collingwood, Schofield says he’s waiting nervously on selection.

“I’ll be waiting on selection Thursday and Friday like everyone else,” he said on SEN.

“From my perspective, it’s great to be part of the backline again… it was a disappointing way to come out of the team at the start of the year for me. I got reported, rubbed out and felt like I let a few people down.

“To come back into the team the back part of the year has been really pleasing.”

Schofield was forced to bide his time playing scratch matches as the Eagles went on an eight-game winning streak following his suspension for headbutting Port’s Zak Butters.

But when injuries cruelled the side’s top four push late in the season, Schofield was again given the opportunity to come into the team late – just as he did in 2018.

“It’s a bit of a legacy piece … you don’t want to walk away from the game having your last action getting reported for headbutting someone,” he said.

“That was a driver for me for sure.

“I went away and worked pretty hard and fought for my spot back in the team.

“I just wanted that opportunity to prove that (the headbutt) was out of character.”

Schofield said knowing he was faced with an end to his career should the Eagles lose on Saturday night, he had extra motivation.

“Those flags are bloody hard to come by so you want to make the most of every year,” he said.
