Dockers president Dale Alcock has thrown his full support behind the club’s successful AFLW team amid concerns over the competition’s cost in trying times.

With the AFL looking to cut costs due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the AFLW has come under fire as it fails to turn a profit.

The Dockers were the best and only undefeated side in the AFLW before COVID-19 caused a premature end to the season with no premier crowned.

Speaking on ABC Radio today, Alcock said he’d back the club’s successful program and coach Trent Cooper, who was named coach of the year.

“I’d be so strident as to say we’d die in a ditch over that,” Alcock said.

“It should be and is part of the fabric of the AFL, now and into the future, so I would defend that until the cows come home.

“We’re not just using words to say we’re committed to it, the girls are just so much part of our club and the culture of our club.

“And also too, we understand that we’re seeing a broadening of the following and increase in our membership, whilst initially small, but they’re a different group of people seeing AFL through a different set of eyes.”
