Kevin Durant will be out through the All-Star break because of a hamstring injury, sidelining the Brooklyn Nets star from a game for which he was chosen to serve as a captain.

The Nets said Friday after a routine follow-up MRI on Durant's left hamstring, it was determined he needed additional recovery time.

"The latest images provided a clearer picture of the hamstring and while we are confident that Durant will return at full strength, this extra recovery time will allow him to perform at the level at which he has been playing this season once he returns," the Nets said in a statement.

"Durant will continue to undergo rehabilitation and will be re-assessed following the break."

Durant has missed Brooklyn's last six games. The Nets, who have won eight straight, have three more games before the break.

Durant, in his first season back after recovering from surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, was the leading vote-getter in the Eastern Conference.

That made him a captain of one of the teams in the March 7 All-Star Game, and he's scheduled to select a team opposite LeBron James next Thursday.

Durant, 32, is averaging 29.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 19 games this season after missing all of 2019-20 due to recovery from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in Game 5 of the 2019 NBA Finals.

Indiana Pacers forward Domantas Sabonis will replace Durant.

This will mark the second straight All-Star Game appearance for Sabonis, who is averaging a career-high 21.5 points per game.

He also ranks fifth in the NBA in rebounding (11.7) and is averaging a career-high 5.7 assists in 30 games.

The 24-year-old Sabonis has 24 double-doubles, second in the NBA only to Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic (28). Sabonis has recorded three triple-doubles this season.
