Australian cyclist Matthew Glaetzer has been left heartbroken after his bronze medal in the individual sprint was revoked post-race.

Glaetzer’s roller-coaster weekend took yet another turn after judges deemed he was the culprit for a coming together between him and Scotland’s Jack Carlin in the bronze medal race.

The pair went wheel-to-wheel and shoulder-to-shoulder in the third heat of their bronze medal race, before Glaetzer sped away from Carlin to claim a medal.

It came a day after Glaetzer, a gold medal winner in the team sprint, crashed out of the Keirin as he attempted to win his third straight title in that discipline, and the cyclist still bore the visible scars and grazes from Saturday’s clash.

However, Glaetzer — who overcame a thyroid cancer diagnosis in 2019 to reach the Tokyo Olympics last year — went from euphoric to shocked as the judges gathered in the aftermath of the race.

They zeroed in on the brief contact between him and Carlin and spent almost half-an-hour reviewing the footage, much to the chagrin of a clearly-ropable Australian official.

The call eventually came to relegate Glaetzer to fourth spot after the Australian was deemed to have moved down to the inside of the track towards his opponent.

A heartbroken Glaetzer looked devastated in the wake of the decision, sitting off by himself and looking stunned as the bronze medal was cruelly ripped away from him.

It put a dampener on a wonderful night of sprint action for Australia, after Matthew Richardson won the gold off the back of a pair of excellent performances.
