WA’s Josh Inglis made a case for his T20I debut in the World Cup after finding the boundary with the only two balls he faced to secure a win in the Aussies warm-up clash with New Zealand.

Batting at 9, the 26-year-old hit the winning runs for Australia with a ball to spare after scooping a delivery from Kyle Jamieson in the final over for four before edging the next delivery to the rope again.

Uncapped Inglis was among a handful of WA stars to produce handy cameos, with allrounders Mitch Marsh (24 from 15 balls), Ashton Agar (23 from 18) and Marcus Stonis (28 off 23) also adding handy runs to the total.

Unfortunately for Marsh, he was whacked for 53 runs off of his four overs for no wicket. Stonis did not bowl.

Most concerning for the Aussies was the wicket of David Warner, who was dismissed for a golden duck.

The Game AFL 2024

Warner was caught by a diving Martin Guptill in a sensational slips catch off Tim Southee with the first ball of the run chase, continuing his miserable run in the short format.

Matthew Wade was also out for a duck off three balls, after being handed the gloves ahead of the WA ‘keeper-batsman - prompting calls for Inglis to take his spot in the tournament proper.

Adam Zampa (2-17 from his four overs) and Kane Richardson (3-24 from four) were the pick of the bowlers, as in-form duo Glenn Maxwell and Josh Hazlewood were rested.

Pat Cummins was left out of the side after just wrapping up his hotel quarantine stint in the UAE.

Steve Smith top scored with the bat (35 off 30) for Australia while New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson led the way for the Kiwis with 37 off 30.

The Aussies’ World Cup campaign officially starts against South Africa in Abu Dhabi on October 23.
