Perth Scorchers captain Mitch Marsh has succumbed to an ankle injury in his side’s IPL opener overnight.

Marsh’s Sunrisers, captained by David Warner, were taking on Aaron Finch’s Royal Challengers Bangalore, with WA wicket-keeper Josh Philippe on debut for the latter.

Marsh managed just two deliveries when he sustained what looked to be an innocuous injury to his right ankle, dropping to the ground in pain.

The injury occurred on the follow-through of his bowling action, but he didn’t appear to roll his ankle or land awkwardly.

Fortunately for the injury-prone 28-year-old, it’s the opposite ankle from the one he required surgery on in 2018.

Visibly in pain, Marsh bowled two more deliveries before he was forced from the field as he struggled to weight-bear.

He came out as his side’s final batsman when they required ten runs to win, but was dismissed first ball and required medical assistance to leave the field.

With two months until Australia’s next white ball commitments, slated to be against India in late November, Marsh may find himself in a race to be fit for the home summer.

"It doesn't look great,” Warner said after the 10-run loss.

“A lot of courage from him to walk out there and try his best, but it was unfortunate tonight.

"He's got to get an X-ray, hopefully it's not too bad. It doesn't look great. Obviously what you saw out there, it was quite painful, he can't put any weight on it. Fingers crossed."

Marsh was Hyderabad’s final international in their starting XI, with Warner admitting the team was tossing up between the West Aussie and Renegade Mohammad Nabi.

“We went with the bowling allrounder, hitting the wicket as hard as we could (which) was probably the better option,” he said.

The team suffered a further injury scare when star spinner Rashid Khan collided with a teammate while batting, requiring a concussion test after the head knock.

Sunrisers will hope to have New Zealand captain Kane Williamson back to fitness shortly after missing the opening clash with a quad injury.
