Perth Scorchers import Amy Jones is used to joining her Big Bash teammates after their preparation has started, but this year she’s a late arrival for a very different reason.

The English international is currently serving a two-week hotel quarantine period in Adelaide ahead of linking up with the team in Sydney on Monday, trying to stay match fit by throwing balls against her mattress.

“As an overseas player you join the team a lot later, that’s standard really, so gelling as a team is not really a concern,” Jones said.

“I’m lucky I’ve played with the Scorchers for a few years and I know everyone really well. I guess the challenge is coming out of a two-week hotel quarantine, physically that’ll be the challenge without running on grass and things like that.”

Despite the difficulties of being confined to a tiny hotel room until Sunday morning - seven days out from their season opener - the 27-year-old admits it could be a whole lot worse.

“It’s been very different, I’m very lucky I’m not a bowler, I think they’ve got a lot more challenges,” she said.

“We’ve been really well looked after, we’ve got treadmill, a bike and lots of gym equipment. In terms of physical stuff it’s been fairly easy to keep on top of it.

“We’ve had to get a bit creative with skills, we’ve been throwing tennis balls into the mattress and things like that.

“Hopefully we’ve not caused too much trouble to the people either side of us - we haven’t had any complaints yet! It’s been quite tricky squeezing it into the room.”

A medicine ball and a few shoulder strength exercises are helping Jones maintain her conditioning, plus an unexpected training session was welcomed with open arms.

“We had a surprise training session yesterday so we got to leave, go outside and have a hit so that was brilliant,” she said.

“Mentally it was really good just to get out and it was great to hit some balls again.”

Jones opened alongside former captain Meg Lanning last year as the pair combined for four out of the team’s five century stands.

But the off-season recruits of Beth Mooney and New Zealand captain Sophie Devine will see the wicket-keeper shuffle down the order.

“It’ll be good to have those conversations and get out and practice together,” Jones said of her batting position.

“Having already played with Soph at Loughborough Lightning back at home I’m just really excited to play with her again and to learn from Beth.

“She’s obviously one of the most successful T20 players in the world so I'm really excited and can’t wait to get going.”

Perth take on reigning champions Brisbane Heat in their first match of the season on Sunday week.
