WA cricket legend Rod Marsh received a rousing farewell from western derby fans at Optus Stadium on Sunday.

At half-time of the tense clash, fans of both sides stopped to remember the wicketkeeping great, who died after suffering a heart attack in Bundaberg on February 24.

A video tribute, narrated by another WA cricket great Adam Gilchrist, took centre stage on the big screens at Optus.

The same video was the centrepiece of Marsh’s funeral.

Marsh was remembered as someone who “would die for the baggy green but also kill for it”.

The tribute also recognised the special bond Marsh had with fellow WA great Dennis Lillee. The “bowled Lillee, caught Marsh” combination featured 95 times.

The video received warm applause from the West Coast-centric crowd.

It remains increasingly unlikely that the State memorial offered to the Marsh family by the McGowan Government will go ahead following a funeral service attended by greats of the game at Adelaide Oval on March 17.

But the Eagles jumped at the chance to farewell the cricket icon, rewriting their normal half-time programming to farewell one of WA’s great sporting figures.

Marsh’s shock death at the age of 74 came just hours before another Australian cricket legend, Shane Warne, also died from a heart attack in Thailand.
