AFL releases fixture for rounds 9 and 10, steers away from Thursday night footy

An improved Fremantle has been overlooked for a Friday night slot in the latest fixture release, with the Dockers’ drought in the prime weekly slot closing in on half a decade.

The AFL this morning unveiled the fixture for rounds nine and 10, with patchy sides St Kilda and Geelong earning the Friday night clash for the first of them.

Round 10 will feature a blockbuster Friday night match-up as Brisbane and Richmond square off in a preliminary final rematch.

Fremantle are hot favourites to beat North Melbourne this weekend and improve to 4-2 on the season, but the Dockers still haven’t been entrusted with a Friday night slot. The last time they played on that day was round 17 of 2016.

Freo will take on Essendon in the early Sunday game (May 15) of round nine, before a Saturday night home bout with Sydney the following week.

Coming off a Friday night game of their own last week, West Coast are slated to host Adelaide in the final game of round nine (May 15) before jumping into the early Sunday slot the following round against GWS in Sydney.

The AFL confirmed Thursday night footy won’t be seen until round 13 at the earliest, after the first round of byes is completed.

The Dockers haven’t played Friday night footy for almost five years.
