Geelong midfielder Jack Steven has announced his immediate retirement from the AFL, despite having a year to run on his contract at the Cats.

Steven, who won four best and fairest awards in 11 years at St Kilda before crossing to Geelong for the 2020 season in the 2019 AFL trade period, has stepped away after 192 games and 113 goals.

“We are happy for Jack that he has made this decision and wish him well in his future,” Geelong’s general manager of football Simon Lloyd said.

Steven was drafted with pick 42 in the 2007 draft, before debuting in 2009 where he established himself as the Saints’ premier midfielder, winning best and fairest awards in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2018.

After 183 games for the Saints he was traded to Geelong for pick 58.

Steven played just nine games this season, averaging just 16 disposals as he struggled with form and fitness.

His final game came in round 18 against Sydney, before missing the Cats’ finals series.

Geelong have had a big off-season, trading in Hawthorn’s Isaax Smith, GWS forward Jeremy Cameron and North Melbourne midfielder Shaun Higgins.

Rising star Lachie Fogarty was traded to Carlton, while Steven joins defender Harry Taylor and superstar Gary Ablett as Cats who have retired after the grand final loss to Richmond last month.

Geelong today also announced they have re-signed defender Jack Henry for the 2021 season.
