Could not have been any more impressive winning at his first run for Kris Lees in that Muswellbrook maiden. On his way now.

NEXT BEST

Race 4 No. 6: Kadashi

Daughter of Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente who was never going to lose at Scone and put it straight over the black dot. Mare in form.

VALUE

Race 7 No. 3: Lucky To Win

Hasn’t been able to win or place for a while but he’s not running bad races just the same. Should get his chance from the draw.

QUADDIE

Race 4: 6,7

Race 5: 1,3,5

Race 6: 2

Race 7: 3,9

JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

Ash Morgan needs to make every post a winner to take out the TAB Jockeys Challenge; but it’s possible if all four rides show up.

BALLINA

BEST BET

Race 6 No. 13: Phil’s Dream

Deserves another win bearing in mind that he has won once in 28 starts but finished runner-up seven times including at his past three outings.

NEXT BEST

Race 2 No. 5: Tinpit

Been a little bit costly from a punting angle but is ready and able to reward the true believers today.

VALUE

Race 7 No. 15: Rioli

Beaten at 42 of his 45 starts but has placed 13 times and doesn’t run that many ‘bad races’. Better yet, he is ‘one for one’ at Ballina.

INSIDE MAIL: NEWCASTLE - BEAUMONT

RACE 1

Mosht Up is a daughter of Black Caviar’s brother, Moshe, and has only managed to win three of her 55 starts but keep in mind that he has placed 18 times. One other thing about the mare is that she often ‘pays big’ when she does sneak into the placings. This might be her day. Stellar Blaze is another mare with a poor winning strike rate but a decent place strike-rate. Nice race for her too. Miss Barty’s Party has a sticky draw bit otherwise makes appeal. Dawntillarvi would only have to repeat her run here two starts back to figure.

Bet: Mosht Up to win, quinella 5,6

RACE 2

American President is well-named being a son of Starspangledbanner out of Whitehousewhipsers. He is in every way his father’s son being a chestnut with a white and four white socks. He was pretty hard to miss when he ran on from the back to finish close enough in a race at HQ on Cup day. Lord Winston is a Wanless/Lees gelding who drifted on debut at Gosford (it was a decent quality maiden) and battled on OK without really threatening. Fitter and more experienced for the run. Colonist has come back a better horse.

Bet: American President to win, quinella 2,6

RACE 3

Estonia is a future broodmare of considerable worth – reason being, her third dam is Show Dancing. So far as her racing prospects are concerned, the Richard and Michael Freedman-trained Lonhro filly has finished runner-up in both starts this preparation giving the impression she might peak now. Stablemate Pharaoh’s Reign steps out for the first time today. The daughter of the US Triple Crown winner American Pharoah has done enough in her (five) trials to suggest she will run well. Ditto for another debutant in Angelical. Khulan is the blowout.

Bet: Estonia to win or of scratched, Pharaoh’s Reign each-way and Khulan to place

RACE 4

Kadashi is a daughter of the Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente out of a half-sister to the Lexus winner Signoff who ran fourth in a Cup himself so it is no wonder that this mare can stay. She was run down at Scone two starts back by Clyde who ran in the VRC Derby eight days later. Kadashi was back at Scone on November 15 and was never, ever going to get beaten. She’s in red hot form. Seporto has only won once in her 37 starts but she is well placed here on a few levels. Lady Redwood has chased Black Queen home at her last two.

Bet: Kadashi to win

RACE 5

Spellcatcher looks a pretty astute buy now; Australian Bloodstock paid $55,000 for the son of Extreme Choice at the Easter Yearling Sales. The trials have been wholly suggestive of a first-up win and many more to come thereafter. Speaking of trials, there was a great deal to like about what Le Bernadin offered in a heat at Warwick Farm last Tuesday. Well bred horse in good hands and has a favourable alley. Ditto all that for Foolish except for the added fact that he has raced twice. They were good runs but not if you took the $1.95 and /or $2.60.

Bet: Spellcatcher to win, Le Bernadin to place

RACE 6

Miracle Day had his first six starts down in Victoria when trained by Robert Hickmott. The son of Street Boss switched to Kris Lees who sent him to Muswellbrook for the proverbial easy kill and boy did it turn out that way. It was deadset like a jump-out for the $1.30 shot. Can’t vouch for the quality of the opposition but you can only slay them. Velorum is a Paul Messara trained son of Not A Single Doubt who should play a role here on the score of his two runs back. Capanello has been racing well up north of here. He could add some significant value to the exotics. Chalkey has mixed and occasionally matched it with some handy horses.

Bet: Miracle Day to win or if scratched Capanello to place

RACE 7

Lucky To Win has won just once in his 15 starts but to be fair to the horse, he hasn’t always had the best of luck ‘in-running’, some of that can be wholly attributed to bad barriers and such. Today, the Gary Moore trained son of Deep Field has gate four so you would hope and expect that Alysha Collett may be able to take up a favourable and handy position from there. The horse is racing well enough – no doubt. Hit The High Note was going to be in the finish first-up at Port Mac but got shut down late. She could well go around here over the odds. Justfour is a lightly-raced last start winner drawn well – can’t ask for much more than that.

Bet: Lucky To Win to win, Hit The High Note to place
