Capital Flight’s surge in form has caught Coreen Maynard by surprise as the pocket rocket chases a fourth consecutive victory at Belmont Park on Saturday.

After showing more fiery character than ability in his early education, the pint-sized gelding has exploded with an impressive hat-trick of victories.

Capital Flight followed his maiden win with a five-length romp at Northam and another dominant display at Belmont last week, overcoming a difficult run to score by 1-3/4 lengths.

Maynard, the partner of former top trainer Frank, will be chasing a breakthrough Saturday triumph when Capital Flight starts one of the fancies in the Crown Perth Handicap (1000m).

“He was a shocking mover and a bit piggy,” Coreen Maynard said.

“He never showed a lot in trackwork and he’s only about 15 hands high.

“He’s definitely turned around now. Brother Paddy has got a good work ethic and they work together, so I think it’s rubbing off on him.”

Maynard is under no illusions about the task Capital Flight faces against smart three-year-olds Thomas Magnum, Beads, State Of Power and Storm Commander.

“There are a couple in there that go all right,” she said.

“Everyone’s got big raps on him but until you beat some quality horses, you just don’t know.

“To win four in a row, you’ve got to be a pretty good horse.

“If he wins again, then I would start thinking he’s a bit better than we thought.”

Apprentice Brandon Louis will ride Capital Flight, who is the $4 second favourite with Ladbrokes. He comes into barrier five after the scratching of My Baby Blue Jean.

Meanwhile, co-trainer Dan Pearce can’t split his consistent duo Black Fantasy and Outspoken Lad when they clash again in the Belmont Classic (2200m) on Saturday.

A short neck separated Black Fantasy and Outspoken Lad in the Aquanita Stakes (2000m) last start, with the former claiming a breakthrough feature victory in the tight finish.

Pearce, who trains in partnership with his brother Ben, is hoping for a replica of the quinella.

“I think the extra trip suits Outspoken Lad,” Dan Pearce said.

“He probably looks more the genuine staying type, but take nothing away from Black Fantasy.

“We said last start they were hard to split and there was only a short neck between them.

“I’d say the same thing again. They’re both nice horses and both in good order.”

Black Fantasy, the $2.80 favourite, jumps from barrier four with Lucy Warwick on board.

Outspoken Lad is on the third line of betting at $4.60. He has drawn barrier three for jockey Shaun O’Donnell.
