Tokyo Olympics: Australian Logan Martin secures gold medal in BMX freestyle

Australian Logan Martin says he hopes he’s appeased his neighbours after building a practice facility in backyard helped lead to the first-ever men’s BMX freestyle Olympic gold medal.

Martin secured the win on the first of his two runs in the final - a routine he deemed his “safety run” - leading to an essential victory lap before he celebrated his new title.

The 27-year-old born in Logan in Queensland - hence the name - dominated the rest of the competition and scored a 93.30 in his first run to sit 1.25 points better than any of the two runs each from his rivals.

“We didn’t have any training facilities around my area, so it was either build my own facility if I wanted to stay on the Gold Coast or move overseas,” he said.

“I bought a property with enough land and I did just that - I built my own skatepark.

“A few of my neighbours weren’t too keen on the idea. It obviously paid off, and I hope they see that it paid off, too.”

Martin’s routine included a stunning front flip without his hands on the bike in a move that quickly went viral.

Martin appeared to shake his head in disbelief upon receiving his medal, which was the 13th for Australia at the Games so far.

“I have no words. It’s still sinking in,” he said.

“I came into this final with all the pressure in the world on me and I’ve overcome that, and managed to win the event on my first run.

“I honestly can’t believe it. I’m so stoked.

“That was my safety run, and it got 93.30. I didn’t even bring out any of my big tricks in that run.

“It’s crazy to think. But anyone that’s seen me ride before... they know I had a lot more.”

Martin paid tribute to his Aussie Olympic teammates and his family, with pregnant wife Kimberley and the couple’s two-year-old son Noah cheering him on from their Gold Coast home.

“It’s the cherry on top for me. This just tops all my career achievements,” he said.

“I’ve honestly just been overwhelmed the past few days with all the support. The Olympic spirit has shown here.

“I’m stoked to bring home the gold medal.”

Earlier, Australia’s Natalya Diehm narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s event, finishing fifth behind Great Britain gold medal winner Charlotte Worthington.
