Sydney remain in talks with Tom Hickey, with the Swans confirming they’re still keen to make a trade for the West Coast back-up ruckman after ruling out another potential ruck option.

The Swans and Eagles are understood to be closing in on making a deal ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline, with Hickey potentially on the move to a fourth AFL club after a two-year stint at West Coast.

The 29-year-old played 20 senior games last year, but mustered just three this year due to a fit Nic Naitanui and the emergence of young ruck option Bailey Williams.

Speaking on SEN this morning, Swans chief executive Tom Harley confirmed the club remained keen on Hickey.

“We’re talking to Tom,” he said.

“Tom’s obviously contracted with West Coast and I guess with contracted players you always have to respect that.

“We’ve had a discussion with Tom. We think that he can add something to the squad.

“We’ve been challenged in that area, primarily through injuries to Sam Naismith and Cal Sinclair, who we brought in a couple of years ago as a secondary (ruckman)-come-forward who has done an admirable job.

“We’d love to put some support in there.

“We’ll monitor that one pretty closely today and tomorrow and as the trades wrap up on Thursday.”

Sydney’s interest may be heightened by the fact Port Adelaide ruled out Peter Ladhams as a trade option in recent days.

202cm Ladhams made 10 appearances for the minor premier Power this year.

“We appreciate that Port have got some good ruck stocks and contracted ruck stocks,” Harley said.

“We’ve asked a lot of questions to a lot of people but that was shut down pretty quickly.”

The Swans currently hold picks 3, 25, 58, 62 and 82 at the draft.

West Coast is also reportedly working to secure a trade for prolific Brisbane defender Alex Witherden, who fell out of favour with the Lions late in the year.
