Emerging West Coast big man Callum Jamieson is set to be rewarded for his breakout season with a contract extension.

The West Australian understands the 21-year-old, who was coming out of contract at season’s end, is closing in on a new deal to remain an Eagle beyond this year.

The Claremont and North Beach product, drafted with pick 49 in the 2019 draft, only made his AFL debut in round two this season against North Melbourne after an injury-hampered start to his time at the Eagles.

But the 201cm giant has gone on to play six games, mostly shouldering his team’s ruck load in superstar Nic Naitanui’s absence due to a knee injury.

Jamieson is averaging nine disposals, 8.5 hit-outs, five contested possessions and two clearances going up against some of the competition’s premier ruckmen including Melbourne captain Max Gawn and WA-bred Western Bulldog Tim English.

West Coast coach Adam Simpson was full of praise for Jamieson after his performance against GWS last month, saying he admired the way the developing tall competed against bigger, more experienced opponents.

“I’ve been pleasantly impressed with his ability to adapt to the contest,” Simpson said.

“He’s still probably got some kilos to put on but he competes, and that’s what we admire. That’s what we like, so we’ll keep growing that.”

His signature will be another important piece of West Coast’s rebuild, a month after they secured last year’s first-round pick Campbell Chesser to a deal which keeps him at the club until at least 2025.

Premiership defender Tom Cole also signed an extension, of three years, late last month.

Both Chesser and Cole are currently on the Eagles’ inactive list but there’s hopes Cole can potentially play in the back half of the season after a list spot was left open following the mid-season draft.

West Coast return from a bye against Geelong at Optus Stadium on Saturday afternoon, chasing their first home win of the season.
